ANNUAL REDISPLAYS IN THE GALLERY

The Ruskin Collection gallery is not a static permanent display. Each year, Sheffield Collections Trust presents new thematic displays of the collection, complemented by loans, contributions from partners and collaborators, and materials from other parts of the city's collection. As you enter the gallery, there is a permanent introductory space which explains the origins of the collection and Ruskin's intentions in giving it to the Guild for the free benefit of others. John Ruskin commissioned many works of art recording the architecture of Venice. He saw what was to come – that the city would soon be unrecognisable due to the impact of environmental change and poor building conservation. The 2023 collection redisplay imagines the future Ruskin predicted.

The natural world was Ruskin’s greatest inspiration. For him it was a source of wonder and curiosity, beauty and creativity. He encouraged others to share in his excitement, hoping that they would find happiness and enjoyment through discovering nature.

Ruskin often wrote about his admiration for Gothic craftsmanship or buildings ornamented with coloured marble and sculptured decoration. Yet he was also fascinated at how buildings stood as markers of ‘national identity’. For him, a building also showed something of the character of the country in which it was built.

Ruskin studied engraving almost as much as drawing. Partly he admired the precision and workmanship required in creating the images, but also he saw them as an important stepping-stone in learning how to draw and how to see clearly.
