Paul Evans

Please describe yourself and your areas of interest.

I am a ‘multi-portfolio practitioner’. My artistic output encompasses various creative strategies to explore aspects of our physical and emotional relationship with heritage and nature. My work ranges from detailed, representational drawings to vibrant abstract paintings, animations, film, and participatory artworks. Working in collaboration is an important part of my practice, drawing together diverse skill sets to create new perspectives. I have creatively co-produced projects with notable authors including Helen Mort and Chris Jones, graphic designers Human Studio, and leading academics from the Universities of Aberdeen, Cardiff, Lincoln, Manchester and Sheffield. Outstanding achievements include: winner of the Eyestorm Gallery Award for painting (2007), selection for Leverhulme Trust Residency, Cardiff University (2011), winner of the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement ‘Engage’ Prize (2014). My work has also featured in a number of publications including 'Nature Morte: Contemporary Artists Reinvigorate the Still-Life Tradition' by Michael Petry, published by Thames and Hudson 2013. In 2021 my commission ‘Harvesting Light’ for The Festival of the Mind - a ‘fantastic voyage’ of photons from the Sun into a quantum solar cell was featured in the spring issue of NY City based Sci-Art Initiative Magazine - it has since accrued over 100,000 views on YouTube.

Why did you become a Companion of the Guild?

I would like to build a collaborative relationship with the Guild where I can develop my work in relationship to heritage – in its broadest sense – and nature conservation in particular. I can offer a wide creative skill set which I am happy to share through knowledge exchange, presentations and workshops – and I will bring a decade of experience of award-winning work in creative public engagement, and over 4 decades of involvement in environmental activism through Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace.
