How would you define yourself?
Visual Artist, Curator, Cultural Producer
Please describe yourself and your areas of interest.
I have enjoyed, studied and practised Fine Art throughout my life. With a background in Painting and Performance Art I engage with art as both a conceptual position and an intuitive response. The inter-relational nature of process and the material aligned with the belief that the art object is, in its self, a discursive text informs my aesthetic. Following a period of living and exhibiting in Holland and London, I returned to Sheffield, my city of birth, where I took up the role of Artist Curator and Cultural Producer for Ruskin Mill Trust. These roles allow me to further develop ideas on the value of art and craft as educational and therapeutic methods. I continue to practise as a Visual Artist.
Why did you become a Companion of the Guild?
Through my role at Ruskin Mill Trust I developed collaborative relationships with the Guild of St. George and participated in many projects, which encouraged me towards a closer reading of Ruskin. In addition, through a Sheffield childhood in a family peppered with proponents of the Arts & Crafts movement, including knife makers in the Little Mesters mould, I became aware of a generational connection with Ruskin and St. George’s Museum in Meersbrook. To become a Companion seemed a natural choice.
